Chair Thandi Modise
and the parliamentarians were left in a state of despair after seeing
hackers flood their video call meeting on Zoom with pornographic contents.
Due
to the lockdown and social distance order by the president, South African
lawmakers have reverted to virtual work where they hold meetings and
discussions on video call on the globally accepted Zoom platform.
National Assembly Speaker, Thandi Modise, who chaired the meeting with the parliamentarians, suffered a great shock and defeat on Thursday. While holding the meeting, an unidentified group of hackers infiltrated the meeting to abuse Thandi and flooded the video call meeting with abusive and pornographic contents.
According to her, she had earlier warned about the use of the
Zoom platform to hold parliamentary meetings and matters of importance but it
fell on deaf ears. However, the meeting continued on a different link.
The Zoom application is currently the best platform to organize meetings but increasingly becoming vulnerable to hackers as this is not the first case of it being hacked by third parties and posting offensive and abusive contents to disrupt meetings.
The developers face possible failure
and loss in revenue if these matters are not resolved soon.
