Black
Stars general captain- Asamoah Gyan, says he would be full of joy if the
country honours him with a befitting farewell after retirement.
Gyan who made his debut in November
2003 against Somalia, has earned 109 caps for Ghana, becoming Ghana’s all-time
leading top scorer with 51 goals.
The former Sunderland striker has
represented Ghana at the 2004 Summer Olympics and in seven Africa Cup of
Nations in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, helping them finish in
third-place in 2008 and runner-up in 2010 and 2015.
He has also represented Ghana at three successive World Cups- 2006, 2010 and 2014.
In 2006 World Cup, he scored Ghana’s
first ever goal in the FIFA tournament, which was the fastest at the said
tournament after just 68 seconds against Czech Republic.
Despite earning national and
worldwide recognition, Gyan believes his soul will be happy if Ghanaians give
him a proper send off if he retires from Black Stars.
“The people at the top have seen what I have done so if they decide to give me a farewell something, definitely my soul will be happy.
“Although people appreciate me it
will depend on how to do it. I will do my job till the time I am done. I can
decide with my team that I will play a testimonial game. GFA can decide that
they will do something for me [play a game or something]. It will depend on
them.”
The
34-year-old has stressed that he still has enough gas in the tank to continue
to play for the senior national team.
“Secondly it will depend on me on how I want to go about it. For now, I am still in the game but as time goes on, ideas will come. I haven’t planned [on how I will exit the Black Stars]. I am still playing.”
“It is natural. I could tell you that
I will retire in four years but I can call my brother the next day and tell him
that I cannot continue playing.
“It depends on how the day goes.
Every day, the human body changes so let’s see how it goes but for now, I am
okay and playing football.”
Gyan is African’s leading top scorer
at FIFA World Cup with six goals at three successive tournaments.
