The
Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has warned families to distance themselves
from relatives who die from COVID-19, stating categorically that the burial of
persons who die of the novel disease shall be done by health authorities.
This measure, the AMA says is part of
efforts to help spread community spread of the disease.
In an official communiqué signed by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the head of Public Affairs for Metro Chief Executive (MCE), he admonished the general public that bodies who die of infectious diseases including COVID 19 are to be strictly handled by a medical officer or an authorized health officer and not the families of the decease.
“This is in accordance with section 10
clause 2a and b of the public health Act, 2012(Act851) which provide that “A
medical officer or an authorised health officer may (a) determine the manner in
which the remains of a deceased person in a specific manner whether or not the
deceased person is in an infected area if the medical officer or authorized
health officer is satisfied or has reason to believe that the remains of the
deceased person is likely to be an agent in the transmission of a communicable”
the release said.
“The AMA uses this opportunity to
remind all city dwellers to observe all precautionary measures as directed by
the President to prevent the spread of the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID 19)
in Accra.”
