Assemblyman Severely Beaten For Questioning Deputy Speaker Of Parliament

Some Assembly Members of the Bekwai Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday attacked one of their colleagues during the assembly’s sitting for questioning the Member of Parliament (MP) of the area and parliament’s first Deputy Speaker Hon. Joseph Osei Owusu.

Katakyie Kwame Opoku the victim had observed that once the MP had come for their meeting, it would be in the interest of all members of the Assembly for him to assure them he would continue to join in assembly meetings from time to time even after 2020 elections.

According to Mr. Katakyie Kwame Opoku, the MP during his first term in parliament joined the assembly meetings only once in four years hence the need for him to ask for that assurance.

“After listening to him, I suggested to him that, since people listen and accept his words in the constituency, and looking at the fact that there have been many clashes between his supporters and that of Lawyer Amofa an independent parliamentary candidate, I suggest when you get the platform, you should condemn those attacks to prevent any future occurrence. This is because your language has always been about blame games meaning your people would react violently to issues by other people”, Assembly Member of Bekwai Dadease, Katakyie Kwame Opoku told Nhyira FM in an interview.

He further revealed that, as he was addressing the MP and urging him to condemn attacks by both his supporters and that of Mr. Kwesi-Amofa Agyemang his rival, some members of the Assembly quickly attacked him including the NPP Deputy Secretary in the area and started beating him up.

Katakyie Kwame Opoku continued that because he still wanted to make peace, he went down to talk to Hon. Joseph Osei Owusu had left that meeting after the attack but these members became more furious and attacked him again.

He however admitted that, both the Presiding Member and Mr. Joseph Osei Owusu condemned the incident outright and apologised..
