The Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Lawra in the Upper West Region, Alhaji Mohammed N. Donkoh has been asked to vacate his position temporarily.
This follows a
petition a member of the NPP, Lamini Fuseini, sent to the Regional Secretariat
of the party requesting the removal of Alhaji Mohammed Donkoh from office.
The
Constituency Chairman has been accused of grossly miscounting himself as well as
sabotaging the NPP parliamentary candidate and incumbent Member of Parliament
(MP) for Lawra, Anthony N-yoh Abayifaa Karbo.
A statement
issued by the party and signed by the NPP’s Upper West Regional Secretary,
Alitu Isaac indicated that the unanimous decision to have the Constituency
Chairman step aside was after careful consideration of the evidence presented
on the matter.
In the
meantime, the case has been referred to the Upper West Regional disciplinary
committee for an enquiry.
While waiting
for further action from the party’s regional disciplinary committee, Alhaji
Mohammed N. Donkoh has been asked to “step aside as Chairman of the Lawra
Constituency, pending the outcome of investigations and recommendations of the
Regional Disciplinary Committee”.
According to the party, the decision is in line with article 3
(7) of the NPP Constitution.
Party chaos at Lawra
Constitution
Earlier this week, confusion rocked the NPP in the Lawra constituency after some
armed persons, believed to be loyalists of the party hijacked the official
pickup of Alhaji Mohammed Donkor.
Citi News sources in Lawra indicated that the incident
occurred in the town on Sunday, November 22, 2020, at about 11:30 pm.
Pro-NPP youth
purported to be supporters of Anthony Karbo allegedly attacked the driver of
the constituency chairman and confiscated the vehicle after threatening him and
other occupants with machetes.

Regional Organizer of the NPP, Mustapher Goveh who indicated that the matter
had been brought to the attention of the regional party executives also
disclosed that plans had already commenced to suspend the Lawra constituency
chairman.
He said, the
suspension may become necessary because evidence had shown that he was using
the said party vehicle to campaign against the incumbent MP Anthony Karbo who
doubles as a deputy Minister for Roads and Highways.
