The Speaker of
Parliament Prof. Mike Aaron Oquaye has declared the Fomena seat vacant ahead of
the 2020 election.
This comes
after the New Patriotic Party(NPP) wrote to the lawmaking house on the sack of
the Member of Parliament for the Constituency Mr Andrew Amoako Asiamah and the
need to remove him from Parliament.
Speaker of
Parliament making this known said the conduct of the lawmaker is in breach of
the party’s constitution hence making him unfit to represent the people of
Fomena.
“The step taken
to contest his party automatically triggers forfeiture of his party
membership,” the Speaker quoted.
Adding that
“Having forfeited the membership of the party, on whose ticket he was elected
to Parliament, the operative language of the Constitution is that ‘He SHALL’,
which is mandatory, ‘vacate his seat in Parliament’”.
“This lacuna of
a ridiculous situation is not what is anticipated under the 1992 Constitution.”
“In the circumstance and it is
determined that the conduct of Hon. Andrew Amoako Asiamah amounts to vacating
his seat in Parliament.”
The Speaker of Parliament has since
deferred to the Electoral Commission on the next line of action in accordance
with the country’s laws.
