President Akufo Addo has sacked
Colonel Michael Opoku, much to the excitement of the new recruits at the
National Security Agency.
Col. Opoku was the notorious
Director of Operations at the National Security who ordered the rallied thugs
from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) embedded in the National Security
to shoot at civilians during the infamous Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency
by-elections.
He has also been fingered in a
number of dirty deals, including illegal mining operations and illegal
surveillance of political opponents of the NPP.
The reason for his firing is not
immediately clear, but insiders tell Whatsup News that Col. Opoku has already
fallen out with the party thugs enlisted in the National Security.
He was reportedly paying them
their salaries on a countertop, much to the anger of the “boys” he was
arbitrary about the payments.
Some insiders claim the angry
party boys at the security agency may have snitched on him, causing his firing.
Col. Opoku will reportedly be
replaced by one Lt. Col. Agyeman of the 64 Battalion.
Barely a week ago President Akufo Addo had fired, Opare
Duncan, the Deputy National Security Coordinator who has been acting as
National Security Coordinator following the death of Joshua Kyeremeh, the
then-substantive coordinator.
He was replaced with Major
General Francis Adu-Amanfoh, a former Ambassador to Mali.
However, the more
eyebrow-raising part of the restructuring at the National Security is the
appointment of Edward Asomani, a former executive at Danquah Institute, a
pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) think-tank that was founded by President Akufo
Addo’s cousin, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko.
His appointment sparked renewed
suspicion of cronyism from a President who has been thoroughly bashed for his
addiction to appointing his family and friends into key government positions.
