A private school at Akosombo in the Asuogyaman District of
the Eastern Region has recorded 40 cases of Covid-19, myjoyonline.com confirms.
The
report stated that the new cases were revealed by Dr. Winfred Ofosu, the
Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the region although he
refused to give the name of the school.
Dr.
Ofosu indicated that most of the cases recorded were among students and staff
who visited various health facilities within the constituency.
In an
interview with JoyNews’ Maxwell Kudekor, the Regional Director added that while
the number is alarming, all the students are asymptomatic and are responding
well to treatment.
“Most
cases are from communities and from those who visit the hospitals, but
all the children are doing well and they are mostly asymptomatic and they are
isolating. Our team is working with the school authority so that everything
goes on well,” he said.
He
explained that a total of 500 samples were taken from the school out of which
40 students tested positive.
Dr.
Winfred Ofosu advised Ghanaians to avoid mass gathering and group eating since
most people are asymptomatic.
According
to him, the Ghana Health Service is doing its best to contain the spread of the
virus but residents have a greater role to play in protecting themselves.
President
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the government may be
forced to reintroduce restrictions including a lockdown if Ghana’s
COVID-19 cases continually increase in his last address.
He
said, although the government is against the idea of a lockdown due to its
negative impact on the economy, it might resort to that if the rate of spread
increases.
“We do not want to go back to the days of partial
lockdowns which had a negative impact on our economy and way of life. But
should that become necessary, and should the number of active cases continue to
increase at the current rate, I will have no option than to reimpose these
restrictions because it is better to be safe than to be sorry. So together, let
us all ensure that we respect the protocols,” the President said in his 22nd
update on government’s enhanced responsive measures against the outbreak.
Although the president in his last address, stated
that cases have not been reported in schools but this latest news might suggest
other wise. With this happening, it is likely for the President to close down
schools to avoid the spread of the virus.
