One person has been shot dead
and two police officers have also sustained severe injuries in a clash between
Akango residents and police that occurred last night in the Ellembelle District
of the Western Region.
Reports say an excavator machine
belonging to Adamus Resources Limited brought down the electrical pole in the
area which brought total blackout in the community.
The Divisional Police Commander
for Essiama, ACP Dodzi Hlodzi in the Ellembelle District speaking to the media
said Police received the report that the youth of the Akango community have
mobilized themselves to storm the Adamus Resources Limited due to the total
blackout caused by their excavator.
He further explained that
engineers of the Electricity Company of Ghana branch in the district tried to
fix the problem but couldn’t.
This angered the youth of Akango
where they invaded Adamus Resources Limited and beat up workers severely.
The commander asserted that he
sent some of his men to the company to maintain peace after the police were
called upon.
However, the youth upon seeing the Police officers went
berserk, took two guns belonging to the Police, and in the cause of a struggle
between the police and the infuriated youth in an attempt to take a third gun,
one of the protesters was shot where he died instantly.
He said the body of the deceased
has been deposited at the Ekwe Catholic Hospital at Axim to the morgue.
But none of the youth, according
to the commander has been arrested.
