Lionel Messi prediction proved right after Chelsea and Man City’s Champions League ties
Chelsea fans don’t need telling that Mason Mount is one of the
brightest prospects in European football, but on Tuesday night, he proved it
again
Lionel Messi has been proven right by recent performances from
Mason Mount and Phil Foden.
The two young English midfielders are gaining stature by the game,
and not only are they proving themselves in the Premier League, but they are
now having a serious impact in the biggest games at Champions League level.
Mount received some criticism during Frank Lampard’s time in
charge of Chelsea, but since Thomas Tuchel has taken over, it’s become very
clear the midfielder is an undroppable at Stamford Bridge.
Mount’s latest impressive display came
in Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final draw with Real Madrid on Tuesday night
when the Blues picked up a key away goal ahead of the second leg next week.
And the 22-year-old once again proved why Barcelona
superstar Messi was right about him.
Speaking about the best young prospects
in Europe, Messi once said: “Having watched him play he has the potential to be
one of the best.”
That could now prove to be accurate with Mount in stunning
form as Chelsea look to claim their second Champions League title and a
top-four finish.
Meanwhile, Messi may also have been right about Manchester
City midfielder and Mount’s England teammate Foden.
Foden played a starring role as Manchester City put together
a stunning performance to beat PSG 2-1 away from home in their Champions League
semi-final on Wednesday.
Speaking about Foden, Messi said: “He
will do amazing things in the game. He has huge talent.”
Both players will likely feature heavily for England at Euro
2020 this summer and, clearly, each of them will continue to play starring
roles for their clubs.
They could even meet in the final of this season’s Champions
League with both Chelsea and Manchester City in positive positions heading into
their respective second legs.
