Jorginho finished the 2020/21 season as Chelsea’s top goalscorer in the Premier League – with just seven goals to his name.
The Italian
midfielder scored all seven of his goals from the penalty spot over the course
of the 38-game campaign – which is the Blues’ lowest leading league scorer in a
single season where the west London outfit did not suffer relegation.
Jorginho scored his penalties against Brighton, Tottenham, Sheffield United, Everton and Leicester – with two in the same game against Crystal Palace.
This will be a concerning statistic for Thomas Tuchel and it may
well send a message to Marina Granovskaia ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Blues have been linked with
a move for some of European football’s best forwards in Erling Haaland, Romelu
Lukaku and Harry Kane.
The former, Haaland, is wanted
by a host of top clubs around the world after a sensational season and a half
at Borussia Dortmund.
Kane, meanwhile, has recently
made his feelings over his future very clear – with the England captain
admitting he does not want to end his career with any regrets in terms of
winning the biggest trophies. Lukaku also helped Inter to the Serie A title.
Granovskaia was busy last
summer, with the west London outfit bringing in more than £200million worth of
talent ahead of this season.
Despite Hakim Ziyech, Timo
Werner and Kai Havertz all showing glimpses of their talent – none of them have
set the world alight at Stamford Bridge.
Tuchel does expect Werner to
improve playing in front of supporters, though.
“He’s still young and can still
improve,” the Chelsea boss said on his striker, who signed from RB Leipzig last
summer.
“This is what we demand week by
week. When he has some time to reflect, rest, some time on holiday for mental
rest, I’m sure he can take the next steps next year.
“He is not new anymore, he will
know the environment, what he is coming back to, his teammates, what he is up
against on the first game and how to adapt. This will help him.
“We try to push the process
right now because we need him.
“Don’t forget, many goal
scorers in Europe shoot penalties for their team and it’s common that they
reach their high numbers with penalties.
“If we add the penalties we’ve
had to his numbers, many everybody would be delighted with his first year.
“He hasn’t scored penalties, he
doesn’t take them. We should consider that.”
Recent games have highlighted
Chelsea’s profligacy in front of goal and Jorginho’s Premier League stat only
serves to highlight the need for a clinical goalscorer to come through the door
this summer – and for Granovskaia to work some more transfer magic.
