Chelsea have been in excellent form since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager back in January. However, the Blues are likely to have another busy summer transfer window, with Roman Abramovich needing to back Tuchel if Chelsea are to close the gap on league leaders Manchester City next season. Express Sport has taken a look at how Chelsea could line up if they make four new additions this summer.
Goalkeeper:
Donnarumma
AC
Milan star Gianluigi Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and
he could end up leaving the San Siro for free this summer.
Donnarumma
is out of contract with Milan and he is yet to sign an extension.
Despite
Edouard Mendy enjoying a good first season at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have
been heavily linked with Donnarumma.
The
22-year-old already has bags of experience and he would surely be an excellent
addition.
Defence:
Silva, Varane, Rudiger
Veteran
defender Thiago Silva has largely impressed this season and he is expected to
extend his time at the club for a further season.
Real
Madrid defender Raphael Varane has been heavily linked with a move away from
the Bernabeu this summer and, according to Bild’s head of
football Christian Falk, Varane is Chelsea’s ‘Number 1’ centre back
target.
Antonio
Rudiger, meanwhile, has enjoyed a resurgence under Tuchel, having been on the
verge of leaving the club this summer.
With
Tuchel likely to continue using his three at the back system, the trio could
form a formidable back line next season.
Midfield:
James, Kante, Kovacic, Chilwell
There
has been plenty of competition for the right wing-back role, with the likes of
Reece James, Cesar Azpilicueta and Callum Hudson-Odoi all featuring there under
Tuchel, but James appears to be the long-term option.
N’Golo
Kante looks to be back to his best after struggling with injuries and he proved
his worth in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash with Real
Madrid, picking up the man of the match award.
Mateo
Kovacic has been ever-present in central midfield under both Lampard and Tuchel
and he will likely partner Kante.
Ben
Chilwell has had to adapt to a slightly different role under Tuchel and he
appears to be thriving.
Attack:
Mount, Haaland, Dembele
Mason
Mount has become one of Chelsea’s most important and dependable players this
season, starring for both Lampard and Tuchel.
Barcelona
forward Ousmane Dembele recently labelled Tuchel his “favourite manager”,
sparking suggestions that Chelsea could make a move for the Frenchman.
The
Blues are among the clubs interested in signing Erling Haaland and, should they be able
to get the deal done, the addition of a prolific goalscorer will take them to
the next level.
Possible Chelsea line-up: Donnarumma; Silva, Varane, Rudiger;
James, Kante, Kovacic, Chilwell; Mount, Dembele; Haaland
