The result of the Premier League Young Player of the Year vote was announced on Saturday afternoon, with Chelsea’s Mason Mount in the running.
Unfortunately for the Blues’ midfielder, he just fell short
of topping his club season off with another personal accolade as Manchester
City starlet Phil Foden claimed the award.
It had been a memorable season for
the Chelsea academy graduate in his second full season as a first
team player at Stamford Bridge.
He scored nine goals and notched as many assists in 54
appearances in all competitions as Thomas Tuchel’s troops claimed a place in
the top four as well as winning the UEFA Champions League.
The 22-year-old was named alongside other English nominees
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. Meanwhile,
Ilian Meslier and Ruben Dias also picked up nominations.
In the end though, it was Foden who ran
out victorious for his accomplished performances for Manchester City as they
lifted the league title.
That was of no consequence to Chelsea supporters though who
backed Mount to claim the award.
They voiced their displeasure on social media on Saturday
afternoon.
Whilst Mount will feel somewhat
unfortunate to have missed out on the Premier League Young Player of the Season
award, he was still victorious in his club awards having been named as the
Chelsea Player of the Season award.
The Blues’ midfielder has also had a productive season on
the international stage and will hope to be in contention to start for England
at the Euros.
Gareth Southgate’s men kick-off their campaign against
Croatia next Sunday.
