Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have been filled with pride as he watched his first Man Utd signing shine in the European Championship this weekThe clock was sluggishly ticking down in the sapping heat of Azerbaijan, but still Daniel James did not stop running.
As Turkey pushed further up the pitch Wales became penned
into their own box, sitting deep and slamming the ball far away as if it were
going to explode if they held onto it any longer.
With ten minutes between Rob Page’s side and a win which
would all but cement qualification to the knockout rounds of the European
Championship there was little love for the ball, Manchester United winger James
was one of the few exceptions.
Despite running on empty he still did manage to run,
perpetually pacing down the left flank like a relay runner who had just been
handed the baton. It was this selfless act which one again proved why Ole
Gunnar Solskjaer loves him so much at club level.
There is always going to be that extra bit of care for a
player you’ve signed yourself and the fact James was Solskjaer’s first at
United is partly why he is cherished so much by the manager.
But such admiration goes far beyond the fact he arrived
under the Norwegian and despite his obvious flaws there is still a reason why
the Welshman remains a regular in match day squads.
