Manchester United legend Gary Neville feels Chelsea will be very hard to stop in the Premier League title race this season and was largely impressed with their performance against Aston Villa on Saturday evening.
The Blues only
made one notable signing this summer, bringing in Romelu Lukaku in a
club-record £97.5million deal, though, they also did add Saul Niguez on a
season-long loan from Atletico Madrid.
Having sold a
number of players for sizeable fees, Chelsea only had a little net spend while
Manchester City pulled the British transfer record to sign Jack Grealish from
Aston Villa and Manchester United brought in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and
Cristiano Ronaldo.
But, despite
having a quite transfer window than their rivals, Neville still believes
Chelsea might be the team to beat this campaign and says their relentless
performances could draw some stopping this season.
“It was
interesting because I do expect Manchester United to beat Newcastle in which
they did – with or without Ronaldo”, said Gary Neville on Sky Sports.
“But then I went to watch the Chelsea game and Villa played well,
but Chelsea again just proved difficult to beat.
“When Lukaku scored that first
goal, I just said, ‘oh, it’s obvious’. The striker scoring guaranteed, the
players behind him, a decent midfield. They’re going to be very hard to stop
this season.
“Surely the talk will be about
Manchester City, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Man United, but Chelsea I think everyone
knows they’re serious contenders.
“I watched them against Liverpool at Anfield and it
was an incredible display from them, they’re just a good team.
Neville added, “an incredible Premier League title
race and am looking forward to what’s going to happen in the next few months.
“Obviously
everyone is looking to predict the champions earlier – Manchester City?
Chelsea? Man United? – but Liverpool are really in it”.
