Reigning European champions Chelsea had five players nominated for the 2021 Ballon d’Or, with Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Romelu Lukaku and Cesar Azpilicueta all in the top 30.
The
awards took place on Monday, November 29, as the winners were unveiled.
Lionel
Messi won the Ballon d’Or award for a record 7th time, but the Chelsea players
gave a good shift as well.
Jorginho
was one of the favourites for the award, and he was voted as the 3rd best
player of the year. The next Chelsea player on the list was N’Golo Kante who
came off in 5th place.
Summer
signing Romelu Lukaku came 12th for his exploits last season with Inter Milan,
and Chelsea player of the year Mason Mount was voted in 19th place.
Chelsea
skipper Cesar Azpilicueta who had an excellent year for club and country was
voted 29th in the Ballon d’Or ranking.
Chelsea
goalkeeper Edouard Mendy missed out on the Yashin trophy to PSG goalkeeper
Gianluigi Donnarumma.
