"When I was little, I was a striker. In fact, it wasn't until I was 16 years old that I started playing defence. My idols were George Weah and Ronaldo Nazario," Antonio Rudiger has told Marca.
It is
certainly unusual for a centre-back to grow up having strikers as their role
models, but the fact that Rudiger played centre-forward explains it.
It also explains why the German is rather good going forward, he often scores headers and also shoots well from the distance. During his time at Chelsea, the 29-year-old scored 12 goals.
