During a World Cup qualifier match between England and Sweden in 1989, England defender Terry Butcher was involved in a first-half clash of heads with Swedish striker Johnny Ekstrom, which left him bleeding profusely.
After
receiving treatment and being bandaged up, he continued with the game. At full-time, Butcher's white England shirt was totally stained with blood.
The
game ended in a goalless draw and helped England qualify for the 1990 FIFA
World Cup tournament hosted by Italy.
