Bad Weather Delays First Event of World Athletics Championships

The commencement of the men’s 20-kilometer race walk, which marked the initiation of the World Athletics Championships, was delayed by two hours on Saturday due to a thunderstorm.

The delay was announced just moments before athletes were about to begin.

Scheduled events for the evening session of the inaugural day include finals in the men’s shot put, women’s 10,000 meters, and the mixed 4×400 relay.

The World Athletics Championships, overseen by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), have been a significant sporting event since their inception in 1983. The initial occasion was hosted by Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

For the current edition of the championships in 2023, the total prize fund stands at $8.4 million.

Among the victors, the champions will be awarded a cumulative prize of $70,000, while those securing second place will gain $35,000.

Third-place finishers will be granted $22,000 in recognition of their achievements.

In addition to the individual contests, relay teams will be eligible to receive monetary awards ranging from $20,000 to $80,000, depending on their standings in the team tournament.
