Presently, the football community is in mourning over the traumatic collapse and death of Raphael Dwamena, which occurred in Albania during a league match.
On Saturday,
November 11, 2023, during a match between FK Egnatia and Partizani, the
28-year-old Ghana striker died.
Due to Dwamena’s sudden collapse to the ground and subsequent loss of consciousness, the match was ultimately adjourned.
Although his
teammates immediately requested medical attention, they were unsuccessful in
resuscitating the former Red Bull Salzburg forward.
The footballer stated in a 2020 interview with El Periodico De Aragon
that, despite his recurrent cardiac condition, he intended to play football for
an extended period of time.
He explained that his faith rendered him
fearless and that he had confidence that God was with him and would watch over
his heart.
“Obviously, it was not a good feeling to have to
leave football; it was a hard blow to stop playing at that time. But I knew
that I would play again because God is always faithful and is always with me,”
Dwamena said in an interview three years ago.
“Taking the
news was not a problem. And the media will publish everything they hear; that’s
not something new; it always happens.
“At all times, I always feel like nothing is wrong with me. I believe that God is the one who takes care of my heart. I may have symptoms of heart problems or other things, but I am never afraid. God is with me.”
He added:
“Each doctor has his own opinions, and I respect them. I looked for different
evaluations. I respect their roles and jobs, but my wish was to get back to
playing and do everything possible to achieve it.”
Prior to his
demise, Dwamena’s most recent setback occurred in 2021 during a cup match for
the Austrian club BW Linz, where he collapsed.
As a result of his hasty transportation
to the hospital following the incident, the match scheduled against Hartberg
was canceled.
Despite exhibiting great promise as a striker and
experiencing a particularly fruitful tenure in the Austrian Premier League
during the 2016/17 season, Dwamena’s career was frequently impeded by his
cardiac ailment.
