Veteran burger-highlife pioneer George Darko has passed on. News of his passing was rife on the morning of Wednesday, March 20.
It is currently unclear what caused his death. He
was 73 years old.
According to sources, the late George Darko was a
regular patient at the Palliative Ward of the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital
before his death.
The late
musician has been on admission for the past three months.
He was known for his skills as a guitarist, vocalist,
composer, and songwriter. He held the title of Tufuhene of Akropong, bearing
the stool name Nana Apem Darko I.
George Darko achieved enormous success in the 1970s,
1980s, and 1990s and his songs continue to rank among the most classic and
timeless highlife compositions in Ghanaian music history.
Some of his popular songs include; ‘Moni Palava’, ‘Prempremsiwaa,’ ‘Mensei Da’, ‘Ako Te Brofo,’ ‘Bire Bire’ among
others, all in the late 90s.
George’s passing follow the death of
another highlife legend, K.K. Kabobo. Kabobo died few days ago after battling
liver disease for a while and was receiving treatment at the University of
Ghana Medical Centre.
