Chelsea are leading the race to sign €75m-rated Serie A centre-back as they are thinking to fortify their squad.
The London
giants are set to make their move for Juventus defender Mathijs de Ligt in the
2022 summer transfer window. Chelsea enjoyed an impressive summer which saw
them bring in Romelu Lukaku and Saul Niguez (on loan).
A defender was
on the agenda, with the Blues making a move to land Sevilla centre-back Jules
Kounde, only to be unable to reach an agreement with the La Liga giants. The
London giants now have another footballer on their radar, the Netherlands
international.
De Ligt is one of the best
young centre-backs in world football. Only 22 years old, Matthijs is already a
seasoned footballer and could add youth and experience to Chelsea’s defence.
Thiago Silva stays a crucial part of the Blues jigsaw but is not getting any
younger.
More so, the uncertainty
surrounding Antonio Rudiger’s future makes bringing in a new centre-back a
priority rather than a luxury next summer. There is more to the 22-year-old
defender than just his defensive prowess. Having captained the club at Ajax
Amsterdam, the Dutch centre-back will also bring in leadership qualities.
In more ways than one, the
Dutchman can fill the vacuum that Thiago Silva will leave at the defence when
he eventually calls it quits at Chelsea.
Despite his promise, the move
to Italy has so far been underwhelming. Matthijs has failed to meet
expectations and has so far been more of a miss than a hit. De Ligt has played
six games for the Bianconeri this campaign.
